Spring is here and with it comes gardening season. Over the past two years, all Community Gardens in Brandon have seen an increase in people new to gardening wanting to try their hand at it. Gardening offers not only food security, but also physical activity and social connectedness (with consideration of Public Health Orders and limits on people attending, during the COVID-10 pandemic). It is a way to be a part of a community, meet like minded people, share gardening ideas and recipes, learn new ways of gardening and enjoy working together to make the community garden a calming haven to retreat to, especially in these times of stress.
Healthy Brandon (Healthy Together Now) and the City of Brandon are partnering to offer a FREE virtual workshop for those new to gardening, called Gardening 101. Retired greenhouse operator, Bev Logan, will facilitate the virtual class and will teach you everything you need to know about planting your garden, if you are new to gardening – from when to plant, what to plant, how to plant, what tools to use and a variety of other need to knows. Sign up for the workshop and receive a free veggie seed gift bag (supplies are limited – first come first served), as well as a variety of information on local gardening resources emailed to you.
The program is FREE of charge and can be viewed on PMH’s You Tube channel from May 20 – June 5. Register now by visiting the City of Brandon website. View the poster here.
