DRHC Redevelopment Frequently Asked Questions

DRHC Redevelopment

Here are answers to our most Frequently Asked Questions:

What’s changing at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre (DRHC)?

Effective Monday, November 18th, the new front entrances will open at the DRHC. One is a new direct entrance into the Emergency Department assessment and information services area. This entrance will remain open 24 hours a day-seven days a week. The other re-opens the main front hospital entrance, which provides access to the rest of the facility.

Is the front entrance vehicle ramp now open and available for use?

The front entrance vehicle (drive-up) ramp, accessible off 3rd St. SW, opens the same time as the front entrances November 18. There is very limited short-term parking available on the ramp and this will be strictly enforced by PMH security services.

What does all this mean in terms of gaining access to the hospital?

Essentially, there are now fully functioning front and back entrances to the DRHC for the first time since the Redevelopment Project moved into major phases in late 2017.The new front entrances, can be accessed by going down Third St. SW, which has now reopened to the public. The back entrance can be accessed, via the DRHC parking lot, by travelling down Jackson Street or off of the 4th Avenue Southwest. The DRHC parking lot is located at the back of the facility. Look for the walk-paths or, for those with mobility challenges, look for the accessibility ramps.

Watch for signage.

See hospital access map here.

Where can I park my vehicle if I have an appointment or am visiting someone at DRHC?

Public/visitor parking areas are clearly marked within the Dauphin Regional Health Centre parking lot.  Access to the hospital’s public parking lot is via Jackson Street or 4th Ave. SW.  Do not park in the cul de sac (traffic loop). This is for patient drop-off and pick-up only and will be strongly enforced.

Watch for signage.

What happens if I have an urgent or emergent situation? Where do I go?

If your situation is urgent, or emergent, call 911.

We’ve heard of the new entrances. If I want to access the Emergency/Outpatient Department, with a non-urgent or non-emergent situation, where do I go?

The DRHC Emergency Department remains open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  If your situation is non-urgent and a visit to the DRHC Emergency/Outpatient Dept. is required, please check in with the Information/Reception Services area at DRHC.

What happens if I take a HandiVan, Medical Transportation Vehicle (non-EMS) or Taxi to the Hospital?

Transportation assists, such as the supports listed above, can utilize the new front entrance vehicle ramp or continue to use the new cul de sac entrance (traffic loop) at the back of the hospital. There are designated patient drop-off/pick up areas identified.

Watch for signage.

Where can I gain access to the DRHC if I am a staff member?

There is a ‘staff only entrance’ and it remains accessible off the back DRHC parking lot (cul de sac entrance).   Watch for signage.

We’ve heard of recent changes at the DRHC Emergency Department.  If I want to access the Emergency/Outpatient Department, where do I go?

The DRHC Emergency Department remains open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The only change has been a recent relocation to a new space (still on the main floor of the hospital) while renovations continue.
As always, if you have an urgent or emergent situation, please call 911 for EMS (ambulance) services.   If your situation is non-urgent and a visit to the DRHC Emergency/Outpatient Dept. is required, please check in with the reception area at DRHC.  The reception area is best accessed from the temporary entrance off Jackson Street.

If I require a wheelchair, are they available?

Wheelchairs are available inside hospital entrances. Please inquire at the desk upon arriving at DRHC.

I plan to visit someone in the hospital. Do I still need to go to the back entrance?

It’s preferred you use the back entrance. There is ample parking available at the back of the hospital. You can check in with the Information Services desk to locate the elevators or ask additional questions.

What are the visiting hours?

Visiting hours at Dauphin Regional Health Centre are 2:00 p.m until 8:00 p.m.

Are there any provisions being made to access the DRHC if I, or a family member, has a disability or faces mobility or other health-related challenges?

Yes, there will be clearly designated areas for those with disability, mobility or accessibility challenges to make accessing the DRHC a little easier.  This includes wheelchair access and designated parking areas at the back of the hospital. These areas will be closely monitored to ensure they are being used appropriately.
